History of Round Hill
Round Hill developed in western Loudoun County during the nineteenth century, with transportation playing a major role in the community’s growth. Construction of the Snickersville Pike during the 1830s created an important connection between the Shenandoah Valley and communities farther east, and a crossroads settlement began developing near the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. By the 1850 census, Round Hill was established enough to be identified by name, and residents successfully petitioned for a post office in 1857. The community became a rural commercial center serving surrounding farms and travelers moving between Leesburg and Snickers Gap.
Round Hill’s development accelerated when the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad reached the community in 1874. Round Hill remained the railroad’s western terminus until the line was extended to Bluemont in 1900. Rail access also helped transform the community into a summer retreat for Washington-area residents seeking cooler temperatures in the Blue Ridge foothills. The Town of Round Hill was incorporated in 1900. Much of its historic character survives today in buildings constructed between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The 96-acre Round Hill Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009 and contains more than 200 contributing buildings.
