Purcellville is located in western Loudoun County and serves as one of the primary population centers of the Loudoun Valley. The area was first settled during the mid-1700s, with early development centered around transportation routes connecting the Shenandoah Valley and eastern Virginia. The community was originally known as Purcell’s Store during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, after Valentine Purcell established a store and post office in the area. The name officially changed to Purcellville in 1852, and the town was incorporated by the Virginia General Assembly in 1908.
